The New Zealand Hip Hop Summit is back for 2017
Toia Recreation Centre & Ōtāhuhu Pātaka Kōrero Library South Auckland
25th November 2017. Time: 9:45am – 6:30pm
The NZ Hip Hop Summit 2017 is a national event that was first created by the late South Auckland impresario Phil Fuemana in 1996, who had the vision to bring various peoples together to explore and celebrate Hip Hop culture in NZ. Various folks have endeavoured to maintain this vision, but it’s been five years now since the last hip hop summit in New Zealand. With the generous support of Creative Communities, Mangere Otahuhu Local board and FLAVA radio station a 2017 Aotearoa Hip Hop summit is now happening, and we are dedicating it to our beloved Hip Hop legend Phil Fuemana with a kaupapa based on peace, love, unity, respect & having fun; showcasing Aotearoa’s best of the best in beat boxing, emceeing, deejaying, aerosol art, breaking (bboys and bgirls), fashion and old school hip hop experience; ending with our very own underground Hip Hop awards. Hip hop is a global cultural juggernaut, generating billions of dollars a year, and dominates music, fashion, technology, film, and pop culture in general. However, hip hop is always nourished at its roots- the grass roots- where hip hop started and continues to flourish. Originating with poor, marginalised Latino and African American streets kids in the Bronx, New York in 1970, hip hop maintains its original underground spirit, still being practised in garages, schools, livings rooms and streets, by kids all over the globe. New Zealand started developing its grass roots hip hop culture, in the early 1980’s, maintaining practices of the core elements- DJing, Graffiti art, MCing, B Boying, and even Beatboxing, over the past, more than three decades. While New Zealand hip hop superstars like Savage, David Dallas, Parris Goebel, and even Pauly Fuemana (OMC) have had international impact, the New Zealand scene is stimulated by community events like this hip hop summit, where hip hop ‘old school’ pioneers get to exchange knowledge and insights with the up and coming next generation of hip hop talent. Hip Hop is more than a music, it is a culture, and even a way of life, which fosters empowerment, education, action, activism and of course art- for the body, the mind and the spirit.
During the summit the BRING THE NOIZE showcase will feature over 60 underground artists/musicians from Dunedin, Christchurch, Whangarei, Wellington, Rotorua, Hamilton, Tauranga & even up North all coming to perform. This will be a concert not to miss!
A summit song competition called “HIP HOP QUEST” will be hosted by FLAVA radio station with $500 cash prizes & an opportunity for the winner to have their single playing on the radio plus an exclusive studio interview too! There will also be music and beat making workshops by Sabe & S.F.T of 9-5ers rap group; as well as bboy/bgirl dance workshops run by pioneers in the bboy community focused on skill development.
Hip Hop pioneers and music organisations (such as APRA & RECORDED MUSIC NZ) will be sharing their knowledge during a panel discussion giving sage advice and industry based guidance to our future songwriters.
Aerosol writers from all over the country will be battling it out for a large cash prize sponsored by Dlish Authentic Kai, with support from Clear Site NZ LTD, Custom Teez & judged by FDKNS graffiti crew, PLUS an all-day DJ Scratch Jam hosted by DJ Poroufessor!
This is an opportunity to engage the whole community in positive activities covering the all the nine elements of Hip Hop culture: B-boying, MCing, Aerosol Art, Turntablism, beatboxing, as well as fashion, language, knowledge and business; all ages sharing and exchanging inspiration and support. Come along with your whole whanau and experience a fun productive day celebrating our Aotearoa hip hop history, culture and incredible talent.
